A word square is a pattern of words of equal length which read either across or upwards. The easiest ones to compose are those in which the words are the same in both directions, such as:
Double word squares, on the other hand, are more tricky to work out. In these, the words across are different from the words down, as in:
Draw out your own square of four each way — unless you fancy your chances with a longer set of words. Start by writing a four-letter word in the top four squares, and then add one top to bottom on the left. See how long it takes you to fill in the others. And remember — every line must make a proper word.
